Centuries of pigment are embedded in the very walls — Siena earth, Venetian red, the sun-bleached lemon of a Ligurian façade peeling above a narrow canal — and the light conspires with all of it to make even mundane afternoons feel painterly. There is a warmth to the Italian landscape that has nothing to do with temperature, something in the amber haze over olive groves and the way cypress trees stand against a pale sky like brushstrokes held upright.
