The art
Are these real places?
Yes. Every piece starts from a real viewpoint in the destination: an actual street, temple, harbor or coastline. It’s then designed into our watercolor style, so you’re hanging a place you can stand in, not a generic illustration.
Are they hand-painted originals?
No. They’re watercolor-style designs printed to order on canvas. That’s what keeps a large canvas affordable. If you want a one-of-a-kind original, a gallery is the better fit, and we say so on our comparison page.
How many destinations do you have?
More than 1,700 pieces across 111 countries, organized by region, country and city, with new places added every week. You can browse them on the interactive map or in the full gallery.
Will pieces from different cities look good together?
That’s the idea. The whole collection shares one watercolor style, so Kyoto, Cartagena and your hometown can hang on the same wall as a set. Try it with Pick your own 4: choose any four places, one size, and add them all to your cart at once.
Will the colors look exactly like my screen?
Very close. Every screen shows color a little differently, so expect small shifts. If a piece arrives and the color isn’t what you expected, tell us and we’ll make it right.
Style & inspiration
What style of art is The Painted Passport?
Our travel wall art lives somewhere between a watercolor and an oil painting. Each piece starts from a real viewpoint, then is designed in a soft, painterly style: the luminous, layered washes of watercolor art, the richer color and visible brushwork of an oil painting, and the attention to light you see in Impressionist landscapes. The result reads as a painting on your wall, not a photograph.
Is it watercolor or oil painting?
Neither, strictly. It’s a painterly style inspired by both. From watercolor we borrow transparency, soft edges and skies that glow. From oil painting we borrow depth, texture and confident color. Every piece is designed digitally and printed on museum-grade canvas, which is how we keep large, gallery-quality pieces affordable. If you’re after a hand-painted original, see how we compare.
Which art traditions inspire the collection?
A few we return to again and again:
- Impressionism, for how it paints light and atmosphere rather than every detail: the golden hour on a harbor, haze over a mountain range.
- Plein air painting, the practice of painting a place on location, in front of the view itself. It’s why every piece starts from a real spot you could stand in.
- Travel sketchbooks and urban sketching, for the loose, personal feel of a place remembered rather than documented.
- Vintage travel posters, for bold, simple compositions that read from across a room.
Why print a painterly style on canvas?
Because canvas finishes the effect. The woven texture catches light the way a painted surface does, so washes look soft and color looks rich. Each piece is gallery-wrapped on a pine frame with the image carried around the edges, so it hangs like a finished painting with no frame needed. You can still add a floating frame if you like.
How do I pick a piece that suits my decor?
Start with the color story of the room. Coastal blues and whitewashed villages (Greece, Portugal, the Amalfi Coast) suit bright, airy spaces. Warm terracottas and golden light (Mexico, Morocco, Tuscany) bring warmth to neutral walls. Misty greens and alpine peaks (Japan, Switzerland, the Pacific Northwest) feel calm in bedrooms and studies. Because the whole collection shares one painterly style, pieces from different countries hang well together. See our ready-made sets or explore the map.
Canvas & sizes
What is the canvas made of?
Museum-grade cotton-poly canvas, printed to order and stretched over a renewable pine frame. Nothing sits in a warehouse; yours is made after you order it.
Does it arrive ready to hang?
Yes. Each canvas is gallery-wrapped on a 1.25″ deep frame with the hanger already installed. Take it out of the box, put one nail in the wall, and hang it.
What sizes are available, and how much are they?
Most pieces come in five sizes, from 10″ × 8″ up to 48″ × 32″.
| Size | Price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 10″ × 8″ | $65 | Shelves, desks, gallery-wall accents |
| 18″ × 12″ | $95 | Entryways, bathrooms, matching sets |
| 24″ × 18″ | $145 | Bedrooms, above a desk or console |
| 36″ × 24″ | $215 | Above a sofa or bed |
| 48″ × 32″ | $365 | Statement walls, restaurants, lobbies |
Every product page shows each size to scale above a sofa, so you can see how it fits before you buy.
What size canvas is best for a living room, bedroom, dining room or gallery wall?
A simple rule: art above furniture should be about two-thirds the width of the piece below it, hung 8–10″ above it.
- Living room wall art: above a standard sofa, go with 36″ × 24″ or 48″ × 32″, or a pair of 24″ × 18″ side by side.
- Bedroom wall art: above a queen or king bed, 36″ × 24″ is the sweet spot. Beside the bed or on a dresser wall, 18″ × 12″ or 24″ × 18″.
- Dining room wall art: above a sideboard or buffet, 36″ × 24″. On a long wall beside the table, one 48″ × 32″ statement piece or a row of three 24″ × 18″. Hang it a little lower than usual so it reads from a seated height, and a place you ate your way through (Italy, Mexico, Paris, Kyoto) makes a natural conversation starter.
- Gallery walls: mix 10″ × 8″, 18″ × 12″ and 24″ × 18″ canvases with 2–3″ between them. Because every piece shares one painterly style, cities from different trips hang together naturally.
- Offices, hallways and entryways: 18″ × 12″ or 24″ × 18″, or a row of matching sizes.
Every product page shows each size to scale above a sofa, or build a set of 4 in one size.
Can I get it framed?
Yes. On most sizes you can add a solid pine floating frame in Black, Espresso, Natural or White. Tick “Add a floating frame” on the product page and the preview updates to show it.
How do I care for my canvas?
Dust it now and then with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and cleaning sprays, and keep it out of strong direct sunlight to protect the color over the years.

Yes. Send us a photo of your canvas on your wall and you’ll get 50% off your next order.
Do you work with restaurants, hotels, vacation rentals and offices?
Yes. A trattoria with Rome and Positano, a taqueria with Oaxaca, a beach rental with Santorini, a lobby with New York and Tokyo. See ideas, sizes and ready-made sets for each kind of space on Who it’s for, or tell Nathan about your space and he’ll suggest pieces and sizes.
Do you sell sets of canvases?
Yes. There are five ready-made sets of four (Italian, Mexican, Japanese, coastal and world cities), each added to your cart in one click at one matching size. Or build your own with Pick your own 4. Need 6, 8 or more? Just ask.
