Getting Around
Reach the Cinque Terre by regional train from La Spezia Centrale or Genova Brignole — all five villages have stations on the La Spezia–Sestri Levante line. Driving is strongly discouraged and parking limited to Riomaggiore and Monterosso. The inter-village ferry operates April–October and is the most scenic connection between the southern four villages.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Aim for a 50/50 card-to-cash split. Most restaurants and hotels accept card but the smaller bars, focaccerie, and wine stands on the caruggi operate cash only. The Cinque Terre card (required for the Sentiero Azzurro trail) is purchased at the train stations and can be paid by card.

Good to Know
Visit before 9 AM or after 5 PM. July and August bring over 2.5 million visitors to a coastline of five villages with a combined resident population of under 4,000. The quality of the experience scales sharply with the time of arrival — the villages regain their character entirely once the day-trip boats return to La Spezia.
🏧
ATMs
ATMs are available at the Monterosso and Riomaggiore train stations. Vernazza has one ATM near the harbour. Corniglia and Manarola have no ATMs — withdraw cash before visiting the smaller villages. The nearest bank branch is in La Spezia, 15 minutes by regional train from Riomaggiore.
💳
Currency
The local currency is the Euro (€). Card payments are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants. Smaller bars, focaccerie, and caruggio wine stands prefer cash. The Cinque Terre trail card is purchasable by card at the train stations. Keep €20–40 in cash for daily transactions and spontaneous wine purchases.
🔌
Plugs
Italy uses Type C and Type F (Schuko) plugs with 230V and 50Hz. Type F two-pin Schuko is the standard across the country and compatible with most European devices. Pack a universal adapter for non-European electronics. All modern devices handle 230V without a separate voltage converter.
🛡️
Safety
The Cinque Terre is very safe. The main practical hazard is the steep, uneven stone paths of the Sentiero Azzurro — proper footwear is required. Rockfall closures affect trail sections seasonally. Swimming from the rocky harbour entries is safe but requires care on the slippery concrete ramps used by the fishing boats.

Airports
Genova Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) is the nearest gateway, 90 km northwest; bus or taxi to Genova Brignole then regional train to the Cinque Terre in approximately 90 minutes. Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA) connects via La Spezia in approximately 2 hours from the southern approach.
