Getting Around
Porto Venere has no rail connection and is reached by bus from La Spezia, roughly 40 minutes away, or by seasonal ferry from La Spezia and the Cinque Terre villages. The ferry is the more scenic and practical option during summer months when village roads become congested.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Porto Venere operates largely on cash, particularly in smaller trattorias, bars, and the ferry ticket offices where card readers are not always available. Carrying euros in small denominations is strongly recommended, as the village has very limited ATM infrastructure and machines can run dry during busy summer weekends.

Good to Know
Porto Venere is a working village as much as a tourist destination, and the locals appreciate visitors who slow down and engage rather than rush through for a photograph. Ordering a coffee at Bar del Centro and sitting without hurry, or greeting shopkeepers with a simple buongiorno, opens a noticeably warmer version of the place than the one glimpsed from the ferry dock.
🏧
ATMs
There is a small number of ATMs in Porto Venere, concentrated near the main waterfront street, but they are not always reliably stocked during peak summer season. Withdrawing cash in La Spezia before arriving is the more dependable approach, particularly for visitors planning a multi-day stay.
💳
Currency
Italy uses the Euro, and all prices in Porto Venere are denominated in euros across hotels, restaurants, and ferry services. Banknotes in denominations of 10 and 20 euros are the most practical for daily use in the village, as smaller cafes and market vendors may struggle to break a 50 euro note.
🔌
Plugs
Italy uses Type F (Schuko) and Type L outlets at 230V and 50Hz. Type L is unique to Italy and a local adapter is recommended for non-Italian devices.
🛡️
Safety
Porto Venere is an exceptionally safe destination with very low crime, though the rocky coastal paths around the headland and down to Byron's Grotto require careful footing, especially after rain when the limestone becomes slippery. Visitors exploring the cliff paths after dark should bring a torch, as street lighting is sparse beyond the main caruggi.

Airports
Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) is the closest international gateway, approximately 110 kilometres north of Porto Venere with connections to major European cities. Pisa International Airport (PSA) offers a broader range of routes and is roughly 100 kilometres to the south, making it a practical alternative particularly for travellers arriving from the United Kingdom.
