About the view

Lake Carezza Dolomites Reflection

Two tall conifers frame the scene like open curtains, drawing the eye straight to the jewel-toned water of Lake Carezza. The lake sits in a natural basin in the Dolomites, and from the shoreline looking across, the surface holds a mirror image of the jagged pale peaks rising beyond the tree line. The water shifts from vivid emerald near the rocky edges to a deeper, cooler teal at its center, and scattered pale stones are visible through it as if the lake were made of glass. A pale blue sky sits above the serrated ridge, dusted with snow along the highest points, and the dense dark green of the surrounding forest deepens the contrast with that luminous water below.

The history & when to go

Lake Carezza, known locally as Karersee, lies within the South Tyrol region of northern Italy, an area that was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1919. The lake sits at roughly 1,500 meters above sea level and is fed by underground springs from the Latemar Group, with snowmelt supplementing the water level in spring and early summer. The distinctive green color results from the way light interacts with the mineral-rich water. The lake and its surroundings form part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 2009.

Late spring and early summer bring the clearest skies and the fullest reflection, when snowmelt keeps the water level high and morning light falls directly across the peaks.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dolomites finds a home on your wall.
