About the view

Santa Maddalena Village Church

A slim white steeple rises from the valley floor, the Santa Maddalena village church so small against the world behind it that it seems almost to be cradled there. Rolling green meadows dotted with farmhouses stretch toward the middle distance, while the slopes on either side burn with deep amber and gold. A faint thread of smoke drifts upward from one of the buildings. Above it all, the jagged Odle peaks lift into a cool lavender sky, their upper faces flushed with coral alpenglow and their lower flanks dissolving into long blue shadow. The warm foreground trees glow as though lit from within, and the eye travels naturally from that blaze of autumn color all the way up to those serrated ridgelines.

The history & when to go

The church at the heart of Santa Maddalena has served this small farming community for centuries, rooted in the distinctly Alpine character that defines South Tyrol's layered Italian and Austrian heritage. The broader Dolomites were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, recognized for the geological drama of their vertical peaks and their outstanding natural beauty.

October is the sweet spot for this view in person, when the surrounding slopes reach peak color and the alpenglow deepens those rose and violet tones across the peaks each evening.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dolomites finds a home on your wall.
