About the view

Ponte Vecchio at Sunset

The view looks straight down the Arno toward the Ponte Vecchio, Florence, seen from river level as the last of the sun drops behind the bridge. The sky above is a wide wash of deep cobalt fading into bands of amber and coral, and the warm stone of the bridge's overhanging buildings glows golden where interior lights flicker behind small arched windows. Three broad arches open across the water, and through the central one the sinking sun pours a column of molten orange light directly onto the river's surface. A lone rower sits silhouetted in a small boat at the very center of that reflection, utterly still, framed by the arch as if placed there deliberately. The water below holds the whole scene in reverse — cobalt sky, amber glow, the dark mass of the bridge — rippling only slightly at the edges.

The history & when to go

The Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest surviving bridges in Europe. The current structure dates to 1345, rebuilt after a flood destroyed its predecessor. For centuries it housed butchers and tanners; Ferdinand I de' Medici later decreed that only goldsmiths and jewelers could occupy its shops, a tradition the bridge still holds today. Running along its upper story is the Vasari Corridor, a private elevated passageway built in 1565 to connect the Palazzo Vecchio to the Pitti Palace.

The glow captured here is at its most vivid in late spring and early autumn.
