About the view

Boboli Gardens Florence Panorama

The view opens from a sun-warmed terrace, its pale balustrade casting long striped shadows across the stone at your feet. Terracotta pots flank the railing on both sides, each cradling a small fruit tree heavy with golden spheres, their round canopies glowing against the bright midday light. From here, the Boboli Gardens descend in a long, ordered sweep — clipped hedges, a central water feature, and symmetrical planting beds pulling the eye toward a warm amber palazzo in the middle distance. Beyond it, Florence spreads wide and amber-toned beneath a hazy blue sky, with the unmistakable silhouette of the cathedral's great dome rising to the right, soft violet hills rolling away behind everything.

The history & when to go

The Boboli Gardens were commissioned by the Medici family in the sixteenth century and laid out on the hillside behind Palazzo Pitti, which became the Medici's principal residence in Florence. Designed as an elaborately formal Renaissance garden, the space expanded significantly over the following two centuries. Today it belongs to the state and remains one of the most important historic gardens in Europe, holding a collection of sculpture and fountains accumulated across several generations of Medici patronage.

Late spring and early autumn bring the clearest light and the most pleasant temperatures for lingering on that upper terrace with the full panorama spread before you.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Florence finds a home on your wall.
