About the view

San Miniato al Monte Steps

A wide staircase climbs straight toward the viewer from the bottom of the scene, each broad step catching the warm amber of late-afternoon sun along its edge while the risers fall into cool shadow. Tall, narrow trees line both sides like dark green sentinels, their pointed crowns framing the façade of San Miniato al Monte in Florence and drawing the eye upward to a pale sky just beginning to soften. The church's front is a composition of white and deep green geometric panels arranged in tiers, a golden mosaic glowing faintly in the gabled pediment, a square bell tower rising to the left. Low shrubs and rounded greenery spill between the trees, their sunlit yellows and greens warming the edges of the scene. The whole view reads as a single axis of calm, deliberate ascent.

The history & when to go

San Miniato al Monte is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany, its construction beginning in the early eleventh century. The church was built over the site venerated as the tomb of Miniato, a Christian martyr. Benedictine monks have maintained the site for centuries, and the building's interior preserves medieval inlaid marble floors, an inlaid marble pulpit, and a painted altarpiece, all largely intact. It stands among the most complete and unaltered medieval churches in Italy.

The staircase is at its most theatrical in the hour before sunset, when the low light gilds every step and the façade seems almost to glow from within.
