About the view

Florence Cathedral Dome Misty Dawn

From a hillside above the valley, the view looks down through a sea of soft morning fog toward the heart of Florence. Rounded, silver-green trees fill the foreground, their gnarled silhouettes dissolving into mist, while slender dark trees rise like dark flames along the middle ground. Beyond them, the city floats half-submerged in pale lavender haze, its towers emerging as dark vertical strokes. At the center, the Florence Cathedral's great dome lifts clear of the fog in deep terracotta red, the only warm note in a canvas of cool blues and greys. A thin wash of peach and gold along the horizon marks the first breath of sunrise, and the Tuscan hills roll away behind in fading layers of blue-violet.

The history & when to go

The cathedral dome, completed in the fifteenth century under the direction of Filippo Brunelleschi, remained the largest dome in the world for well over a century after its construction. Its engineering was considered so remarkable at the time that it drew widespread admiration across Europe. The cathedral complex, known formally as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, sits at the geographical and spiritual center of the city and has anchored Florence's skyline continuously since the late medieval period.

Autumn and winter mornings, when temperature inversions draw a thick blanket of fog across the valley floor, give this elevated view its most ethereal quality.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
