About the view

Piazza del Duomo Milan

The view looks out from the rooftop of the Duomo di Milano, where a forest of slender spires and ornate statues crowds the left foreground in deep amber and terracotta. The eye follows their upward thrust before dropping into the wide expanse of Piazza del Duomo below, its pale paving stones washed in liquid gold as the sun sits low on the horizon. Tiny figures cross the square in every direction, their long shadows trailing behind them. To the right, the arched facade of a grand covered gallery curves along the piazza's edge, glowing the same soft copper as the sky, which bleeds from burnt orange at the center into pale blush at the edges. The whole composition tilts gently forward, as if the city is offering itself up to you.

The history & when to go

Piazza del Duomo has served as Milan's civic and spiritual core for centuries. Construction on the cathedral itself began in 1386 and continued for several hundred years, making it one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world. The adjoining gallery, completed in the nineteenth century, became Italy's oldest active shopping arcade and one of Europe's grandest iron-and-glass galleries, and remains a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. The square has witnessed coronations, proclamations, and the full sweep of Italian history.

Sunset is the moment this view belongs to — when the warm light turns every carved surface to gold and the piazza below hums with the city's early-evening rhythm.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Milan finds a home on your wall.
