About the view

Church of Santa Maria Assunta Dome

Seen from an elevated vantage above the rooftops of Positano, the dome of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta commands the center of the scene with striking confidence. Its geometric pattern of cobalt, teal, and gold tiles radiates outward in interlocking diamonds, a burst of color against the warm honey tones of the church facade below. To the left, the town climbs steeply up the hillside in layers of terracotta, blush, and cream, balconies and archways dissolving into the rugged slope behind them. Ahead, the Tyrrhenian Sea fills the upper half of the composition in deep, electric blue, meeting a sky of almost equal intensity at a horizon that seems impossibly far away.

The history & when to go

The church has stood at the heart of Positano for centuries. Its origins trace to a Benedictine monastery, and the building took on much of its current character during the eighteenth century. The tiled dome, the town's most recognizable feature, reflects the majesty of southern Italian ecclesiastical craft and has long served as a spiritual and visual anchor for the community. Inside, the church holds a revered Byzantine icon of the Madonna, which local tradition associates with the founding of the church itself.

For the view closest to this one, late morning light brings out the warmest tones in the rooftops and turns the sea a deep, luminous turquoise.
