About the view

Matera Cathedral Bell Tower

The view looks across the rooftops of the Sassi toward the Matera Cathedral bell tower, which rises clean and slender against a pale blue sky at golden hour. Warm stone catches the last low light of the day — deep amber and ochre spreading across stacked rooftops, arched facades and narrow stairways that climb toward the cathedral ridge. Terra-cotta roof tiles glow rust-red in the foreground, while the upper city fades into softer, cooler tones where the light has not yet reached. The bell tower anchors the composition from just left of center, its narrow paired windows and tapered spire drawing the eye upward past the tumbling geometry of the ancient district below.

The history & when to go

The cathedral at the top of the Civita ridge has stood at the heart of Matera since the thirteenth century, dedicated to the Madonna della Bruna, who remains the city's patron saint. The bell tower beside it has long served as a landmark visible from every quarter of the Sassi, orienting generations of residents across the ravines. Matera's historic districts were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, and the city was named a European Capital of Culture in 2019, drawing renewed international attention to a place that had been continuously inhabited since the Paleolithic era.

The golden-hour light that floods this scene is at its richest in the hour before sunset, when the entire Civita ridge turns deep amber — spring and early autumn offer the clearest skies to see it.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Matera finds a home on your wall.
