About the view

Sassi di Matera Old Town

The Sassi di Matera spread across the hillside at dusk, caught in that electric moment when the last deep blue of the sky still holds its colour and the amber streetlamps have begun to take over. The view looks across a cascade of tightly packed rooftops and warm stone facades, layer upon layer of dwellings climbing toward a tall bell tower that crowns the ridge against the cobalt evening sky. Soft golden light spills from doorways and arched openings, threading through the ancient neighbourhood like a slow fire. The palette is striking in its simplicity: cool blues above, glowing ochres and honey tones below, with patches of shadow in between that give the composition real depth and weight.

The history & when to go

The Sassi di Matera are among the oldest continuously inhabited cave settlements in the world, and the district as a whole was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. For much of the twentieth century the sassi were considered a symbol of poverty and were largely abandoned following a government resettlement programme in the 1950s. Decades later attitudes shifted, and careful restoration transformed the area into a celebrated cultural landmark. Matera was named a European Capital of Culture for 2019, bringing fresh international attention to its extraordinary layered history.

The blue-hour light captured here is at its most vivid in the warmer months, when clear skies deepen the contrast between the fading dusk and the glowing city below.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Matera finds a home on your wall.
