About the view

Sassi di Matera Cave City

From a warm terrace in the Sassi di Matera, two espresso cups sit on a round café table as the city exhales into dusk. The view sweeps across hundreds of pale, stacked dwellings rising up a rocky hillside, their windows beginning to glow amber and gold against the cooling blue of the evening sky. A slender bell tower crowns the highest point of the settlement, silhouetted softly against clouds flushed pink and violet. Terracotta pots bursting with vivid red blooms frame either side of the terrace wall, anchoring the warmth of the foreground while the ancient cityscape recedes into haze and rolling dark hills beyond.

The history & when to go

The Sassi di Matera are among the most remarkable human settlements in the world, with evidence of habitation dating back more than nine thousand years. The cave dwellings were home to generations of Materani until the mid-twentieth century, when residents were relocated to a newer part of the city. Decades later, the sassi were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the ancient quarters have since been thoughtfully restored, drawing visitors from around the world to witness their extraordinary layered beauty.

The hour just before and after sunset is when Matera earns its most legendary light, the warm glow of interior lamps meeting the last blush of the sky above the ravine.
