Atlantic light does something particular to whitewashed walls and blue azulejo tile, softening edges in the morning and flooding narrow lanes with a warm, almost amber glow by afternoon. There is a feeling of accumulated time here — in the fado-haunted alleys of old Lisbon, in the terraced vineyards climbing above the Douro, in the way the western coast faces the open ocean as if still half-expecting something to arrive.
