About the view

Castle of the Moors

The view looks up along the ramparts of the Castle of the Moors from a low vantage point at the base of the wall, with the eye led upward along a long staircase that curves and climbs toward a crenellated tower flying a small flag. Morning light falls warm and golden across the pale stone battlements, each merlon casting a short shadow that gives the wall a satisfying rhythm. To the right, rounded boulders tumble through dense, sun-bright foliage in vivid shades of emerald and lime. The sky above Sintra is a clear, luminous blue, hazy near the horizon, lending the whole scene an open, airy feeling despite the ancient solidity of the tower rising to meet it.

The history & when to go

The Castle of the Moors was built during the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and dates broadly to the eighth and ninth centuries. Christian forces took the castle in the twelfth century during the Reconquista, and it eventually came under Portuguese royal ownership. By the nineteenth century it had fallen into significant disrepair, but King Ferdinand II undertook restoration works that gave it much of the romantic appearance it carries today. It is now a protected national monument.

Spring and early autumn bring the clearest light and the most vivid green to the hillside, making the long climb along the ramparts especially rewarding.
