About the view

Initiation Well Sintra

The view plunges straight down into the Initiation Well in Sintra, the perspective drawn from the very rim of the opening above. Rings of arched niches spiral inward as they descend, each tier growing smaller and darker until the composition narrows to a single pale point of light far below — an almost hypnotic tunnel of symmetry. Lush green growth clings to every surface: dense, trailing leaves and soft mossy textures spill over the warm stone edges, catching the diffuse overhead light in a dozen shades of jade, lime and deep forest shadow. The palette is almost entirely green and grey, cool and alive, with that distant glimmer of white anchoring the whole swirling descent.

The history & when to go

The Initiation Well is located within the Quinta da Regaleira estate, a property developed in the early twentieth century for a wealthy Portuguese merchant with strong interests in symbolism, mythology and esoteric philosophy. The well descends some twenty-seven metres and is connected by underground tunnels to the wider grounds. It was never used as a working well; its spiral staircase and layered structure are believed to have served ceremonial or initiatory purposes, drawing on symbolism associated with Freemasonry and the Knights Templar, among other traditions.

Early morning light filters down most gently into the well before the estate fills with visitors, making that hour the quietest and most atmospheric time to stand at the rim and look down.

Spiral stone stairs descend into a mossy, moss-draped cylindrical well, pulling the eye down through ring after ring of dripping archways toward a distant light. This watercolor study of the Initiation Well in Sintra renders its vertiginous green depths in cool shadow and luminous emerald, hushed and hypnotic.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sintra finds a home on your wall.
