About the view

Lisbon Tram 28 Alfama

A burnished yellow tram fills the center of the scene, rounding a tight curve through a narrow Alfama lane in Lisbon. The view is taken almost head-on, low and close, so the tram feels as though it is about to spill right off the canvas. Warm afternoon light falls hard across the right side of the street, setting the tram's golden bodywork glowing against the deep blue-shadow of the cobblestones below. To the right, a building face covered in patterned decorative tiles — blue and yellow blooms on a pale ground — catches the same slanted sun. Tall, close-set facades recede up the hill on both sides, their shuttered windows and terracotta rooflines fading into a hazy blue sky, drawing the eye deep into the city behind the tram.

The history & when to go

Tram 28 has been threading the steep, narrow streets of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods since the early twentieth century. The route connects several of the city's hillside quarters and has long been part of daily life for residents, not only a route between points on a map but a moving piece of the city's everyday rhythm. The distinctive yellow carriages are among the most recognized images of Lisbon and are considered part of the city's cultural heritage.

The late-afternoon hours bring the richest light to these lanes, when the low sun turns every tiled facade into something close to gold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lisbon finds a home on your wall.
