About the view

Boca do Inferno Coastal Arch

The view pulls you right to the edge of the arch, looking down and out across Boca do Inferno as Atlantic swells surge through the opening below. Warm amber and rust cliffs rise to the right, their faces catching full midday light, while the flat rock shelf in the foreground glows pale gold and pale green where the sea has left its mark. At the center, a wave explodes upward through the arch in a column of white spray, framed by dark, weathered walls on either side. Beyond, the water shifts from deep teal close to shore to a brilliant turquoise where it opens toward the horizon under a wide, bright sky.

The history & when to go

Boca do Inferno — Portuguese for Mouth of Hell — is a sea arch carved into the cliff face on the Atlantic coast just outside Cascais. The relentless force of the ocean has hollowed the rock over millennia, creating a chasm that funnels incoming waves into a dramatic eruption of spray and sound. The site has long captured the imagination of visitors and locals alike, and in 1930 it became the setting for a celebrated publicity stunt staged by the occultist Aleister Crowley, who faked his own disappearance there, cementing its place in popular legend.

The surge is most spectacular in autumn and winter, when Atlantic storms send the largest swells crashing through the arch.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cascais finds a home on your wall.
