About the view

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Three jagged towers of warm stone thrust upward from a snow-covered ridge, their dark, angular faces catching the last fire of a winter sunset. The view looks up from a low vantage point across a foreground of sculpted snow and scattered boulders, all rendered in cool blues and lilacs that make the warmth of the sky feel all the more fierce by contrast. Above the peaks, the clouds pull apart in streaks of deep crimson and molten amber, the horizon glowing gold where the sun has just slipped away. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo stand at the center of it all — three distinct summits rising side by side, silhouetted and commanding, the surrounding alpine silence almost audible in the stillness of the scene.

The history & when to go

Tre Cime di Lavaredo has long been considered one of the most iconic mountain formations in the Alps. The three summits sit near the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno, and for much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries they represented a serious mountaineering challenge, with the most difficult face attracting climbers from across Europe. The area is now protected within a nature reserve and draws visitors year-round.

Winter — particularly the hours around sunset — rewards those who make the effort with skies like this one: dramatic, fleeting and unlike anything found at lower elevations.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dolomites finds a home on your wall.
