About the view

Sassolungo Peak Autumn Larches

The view opens at the golden edge of morning, the low sun just clearing the treeline on the left and flooding a sloping meadow with warm, raking light. Tall autumn trees crowd the foreground in blazing amber and burnt orange, their long shadows striping the vivid green grass below. Behind them, Sassolungo rises with calm authority — its sheer, angular face catching cool grey-blue tones against a pale sky that still holds the softness of early day. The valley drops away in deep teal shadow to the right, layered ridge after ridge fading into haze, giving the whole scene an extraordinary sense of depth and scale. Warm and cool tones pull against each other across the canvas in a way that feels almost electric.

The history & when to go

Sassolungo, known in German as Langkofel, is one of the most recognizable peaks in the Dolomites, reaching above 3,000 metres and forming part of the group that sits between the Val Gardena and Val di Fassa. The surrounding high meadows have been shaped over centuries by Alpine farming traditions, their open character preserved by generations of summer grazing. The Dolomites were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, recognized for their exceptional natural beauty and their geological significance.

Autumn, typically late September through mid-October, is the finest moment to stand here in person, when the trees are fully turned and the morning light arrives at exactly this angle.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dolomites finds a home on your wall.
