About the view

Dolomites Alpine Mountain Refuge

A warm amber glow falls across the jagged towers of the Dolomites, catching every crevice and ridge in shades of burnt orange, ochre, and deep shadow. The view looks up from just below the refuge itself, a sturdy chalet of rich honey-toned timber perched on a raised platform of pale warm stone, its white-canopied terrace extending outward as if reaching toward the open air. Patches of late snow cling to the grey-blue slopes to the left, and a thin strip of sky peeks through the gap between the soaring rock faces above. The composition pulls the eye from that glowing refuge straight up to the vertical cliffs that dwarf it entirely.

The history & when to go

Mountain refuges in the Dolomites have a long tradition rooted in the development of Alpine clubs in the nineteenth century, when organized mountaineering began drawing climbers to these peaks in earnest. The refuges, known in Italian as rifugi, were established along key routes to provide shelter and supplies at altitude, making the high terrain accessible to more than just the most experienced alpinists. Today they remain essential waypoints on the network of trails and via ferrata routes that cross one of Europe's most celebrated mountain landscapes, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Late summer brings the clearest skies and the most vivid contrast between warm rock and blue air, making the late-afternoon light particularly striking from the trails directly below.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dolomites finds a home on your wall.
