About the view

St. Johann Chapel Dolomites

The view looks up from open meadow toward St. Johann Chapel, a small white church with warm rose-pink trim and a dark onion dome rising from its bell tower. It sits at the valley floor in the Dolomites, framed on all sides by a dense wall of deep, saturated green forest. Behind the trees, the mountains surge upward in jagged, bare peaks — grey and taupe and faintly golden where afternoon light catches the sheer faces. A bright cobalt sky pools between the summits, broken by soft white cloud. The chapel reads almost impossibly small against the scale of everything behind it, yet it holds the composition entirely, pulling the eye to the center of all that wildness.

The history & when to go

St. Johann Chapel, also known as the Church of San Giovanni in Ranui, stands in the Val di Funes in the South Tyrol region of northern Italy. The chapel reflects the strong Tyrolean religious and cultural traditions of the area. South Tyrol passed to Italy after the First World War, and the valley retains a distinctly Alpine character shaped by both Italian and Austrian-German heritage. The chapel is one of the most photographed religious sites in the region and draws visitors from across the world.

Summer mornings, before midday haze softens the peaks, offer the clearest light and the most vivid contrast between the green meadows and the bare rock above.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dolomites finds a home on your wall.
