About the view

Plaza Mayor Lima Cathedral

The view opens from plaza level, looking across the broad open square toward the Cathedral of Lima, its warm golden facade rising between tall palms whose feathery canopies catch the afternoon light. A tiered bronze fountain anchors the foreground, a trumpeting figure poised at its crown, the basin pooling in cool sage-green tones that contrast beautifully with the honey-colored stonework behind. The cathedral's twin towers climb into a soft blue-white sky, their ornate upper levels dissolving gently into the haze of a Lima afternoon. To the left, the amber and ochre of surrounding colonial buildings close the composition, while small figures scattered across the plaza give the scene a quiet human warmth.

The history & when to go

Construction of the Cathedral of Lima began in the sixteenth century, shortly after Francisco Pizarro founded the city in 1535, and the building has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries following earthquakes and structural changes. It stands on the eastern edge of the Plaza Mayor, the historic heart of Lima's colonial centre, and remains one of the most significant religious buildings in South America. The cathedral houses the remains of Pizarro himself and contains a collection of notable religious art that spans several centuries.

Late afternoon is the finest time to visit in person, when the lowering sun turns the cathedral's facade a deep, almost burnished gold and the fountain catches the last of the light.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lima finds a home on your wall.
