About the view

Rijksmuseum Garden Fountain Amsterdam

The view opens from ground level in the Rijksmuseum's south garden, looking across a sea of globe-shaped blooms in deep violet and soft lilac toward the museum's warm red-brick facade. Twin steep-roofed towers frame the building's ornate central arch, while a fountain catches the midday light and dissolves into a haze of white just beyond the flower beds. Lush green trees press in from either side, and a cobalt summer sky with a single drift of cloud stretches above the roofline. The colors are vivid and saturated — purple massing against green, brick-red glowing against blue — yet the composition stays tranquil, anchored by that steady, symmetrical facade rising behind the blooms.

The history

The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands' national museum of art and history, housed in a building completed in 1885 to designs by architect Pierre Cuypers. Its collections span centuries of Dutch and Flemish achievement, with works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and many of their contemporaries among the most celebrated holdings. The garden running along the building's sides is freely accessible to the public and has long served as a green gathering point in the heart of Amsterdam's museum district.

Purple allium blooms crowd the formal garden as a fountain mists the air before the grand red-brick museum facade rising into blue Amsterdam sky. This watercolor study of the Rijksmuseum garden captures the lush violet and rose of the flower beds against warm terracotta stone and luminous summer light.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Amsterdam finds a home on your wall.
