About the view

De Gooyer Windmill Amsterdam

De Gooyer Windmill rises against a wide Dutch sky from the canal's edge in Amsterdam, its dark tower and broad sails cutting a bold diagonal across billowing clouds tinged pink and silver. The view is framed from the near bank, where a sweep of vivid green grass meets a long border of pink, yellow and white tulips in full bloom. Soft spring light falls across the still water, doubling the windmill's silhouette in a cool, glassy reflection, while a row of warm-toned gabled townhouses recedes along the far bank beneath a fringe of freshly leafed trees.

The history & when to go

De Gooyer is the tallest wooden windmill remaining in the Netherlands and one of the last surviving windmills within Amsterdam's city limits. Its origins date to the sixteenth century, and the structure was relocated to its current site on the Funenkade in 1814. Over the centuries it served as a corn mill, and today it is a protected national monument. A small brewery has operated in an adjacent former bathhouse for many years, making the spot a meeting point for both history and everyday Amsterdam life.

Spring, from late March through early May, brings the tulips along the canal banks into colour and fills the sky with the kind of dramatic cloud light captured here.
