About the view

Prinsengracht Canal Westerkerk

A pale blue bicycle leans against a bridge railing in the foreground, its wicker basket spilling over with vivid pink blooms that catch the midday sun. From this low vantage point on the bridge, the full length of Prinsengracht Canal stretches back into the distance, flanked by tall canopy trees whose summer greens reflect in the water below. Colorful houseboats — warm orange, deep green — rest along both banks, and the slim tower of the Westerkerk rises at the end of the corridor of light, pale against a bright blue sky dotted with soft white cloud. The warm terracotta and amber of the canal-side buildings glow on either side, the whole scene drenched in the kind of clear, generous northern light that makes Amsterdam feel almost impossibly vivid.

The history & when to go

The Westerkerk, completed in 1631, is one of the largest and most significant Renaissance-style churches in the Netherlands. It was designed by the architect Hendrick de Keyser and finished by his son Pieter. Rembrandt van Rijn, who lived nearby during his later years, was buried in the church. The tower — the tallest in Amsterdam — is topped with the imperial crown of the Habsburg Emperor Maximilian I, a symbol the city has carried on its coat of arms for centuries.

Late spring and early summer bring the canal-side trees into full leaf and bathe the bridge in long hours of warm afternoon light, making this one of the most rewarding times to stand here in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Amsterdam finds a home on your wall.
