About the view

Keizersgracht Leidsegracht Canal Crossing

The view settles at water level, looking along the Keizersgracht toward the point where the Leidsegracht crosses it in Amsterdam. A warm-toned arched bridge anchors the foreground, its twin curves mirrored in the still, jade-green water below. Beyond the bridge, step-gabled facades rise in deep terracotta and rust, their rooflines staggered against a sky of soft blue and billowing pink-edged cloud. Tall, full-canopied trees press in from both sides, their bright spring green tumbling over the rooftops. In the lower left corner, a cluster of pink tulips on a moored boat catches the low golden light, pulling the whole scene into vivid, unhurried life.

The history & when to go

The Keizersgracht — the Emperor's Canal — was dug in the early seventeenth century as part of Amsterdam's ambitious canal ring expansion, a project that shaped the city's concentric layout. Together with the Herengracht and Prinsengracht, it forms the historic canal belt that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010, recognized for its exceptional urban planning and the remarkable preservation of its period architecture. The crossing with the Leidsegracht has long been considered one of the most picturesque junctions in the entire ring.

Spring is the finest time to stand on this bridge in person, when the trees are freshly leafed and the city's flower markets are at their most vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Amsterdam finds a home on your wall.
