About the view

Prinsengracht Canal Westerkerk Tower

The view stretches down the Prinsengracht at the soft hour just after sunset, looking straight along the canal toward the Westerkerk tower in Amsterdam. The tower rises at the end of the waterway like a gentle exclamation point, its warm stone silhouette catching the last ember glow of the sky. Above it, the heavens shift from tangerine and rose at the horizon into a cool, open blue, and every shade in between is mirrored in the still water below. Tall, leafy trees line both banks, their green just touched with gold. Clusters of pink and white flowers on the canal's edge soften the foreground, and the stepped gables of the merchant houses on either side recede in a satisfying, almost symmetrical corridor toward that single spire.

The history & when to go

The Westerkerk was completed in 1631 and remains the largest Protestant church in the Netherlands built in the Dutch Renaissance style. Its tower, the tallest in Amsterdam, has marked the hours over this neighborhood for nearly four centuries. Anne Frank, who hid with her family in a house on the Prinsengracht during World War II, wrote in her diary about hearing the tower's carillon and finding comfort in its sound. The church and its canal remain one of the most deeply layered corners of the city.

Late spring and early summer bring the longest light and the fullest foliage to the canal banks, making the walk along the Prinsengracht feel like stepping inside this very scene.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Amsterdam finds a home on your wall.
