The Dutch landscape is essentially a watercolour already — flat and wide-skied, threaded with canals that hold soft reflections of gabled houses and cycling figures moving through morning fog. The light here is the same light that made the Golden Age painters obsessive, arriving low and lateral, turning even a rainy afternoon in Amsterdam into something worth looking at twice.
