About the view

Old Town Hillside Neighbourhood

Seen from a slightly elevated vantage point across the hillside, this scene captures Tbilisi's Old Town neighbourhood in a wash of amber, terracotta, and sage. Balconied houses rise in uneven tiers up the slope, their facades shifting from warm coral to soft mint to blush pink, rooflines overlapping like the pages of a well-thumbed book. Lush canopy fills the upper corners, golden light pressing through the leaves and catching the carved timber galleries along each level. To the left, a conical turquoise spire anchors the composition, its cool verdigris tone a vivid counterpoint to all that warmth climbing the hill behind it.

The history & when to go

The Old Town district of Tbilisi, known in Georgian as Dzveli Tbilisi, has been continuously inhabited for well over a thousand years. The neighbourhood's layered character reflects centuries of successive cultures — Persian, Ottoman, Russian imperial, and Georgian — each leaving traces in the architectural fabric. The projecting wooden balconies, a hallmark of the quarter, became widespread during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and remain one of the most recognised features of the city's urban landscape. The area sits within a protected heritage zone and has been the subject of ongoing preservation efforts recognised by international bodies.

Late afternoon in late spring or early autumn brings the hillside its most generous light, the low sun turning every balcony rail and rooftop into something close to copper.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tbilisi finds a home on your wall.
