About the view

Tbilisi Old Town Abanotubani

Snow blankets the rooftops of Abanotubani in this winter view of Tbilisi's oldest quarter, seen from an elevated vantage that lets the whole hillside neighborhood unfurl across the canvas. At the center, a deep terracotta tower crowned with a verdigris dome anchors the composition, its warm reddish hue burning quietly against the surrounding white. Behind it, houses climb the slope in a patchwork of dusty rose, sage, and faded coral, their carved wooden balconies dusted with snow, their pitched roofs silvered by a flat, cool winter light. Slender steeples push upward at the edges of the scene, one tipped in teal, and the hill itself fades into soft grey mist at the top of the frame, giving the whole view a hushed, layered quality.

The history & when to go

Abanotubani takes its name from the sulfur bathhouses that have drawn visitors to this corner of Tbilisi for centuries, fed by natural hot springs below the district. The neighborhood sits at the foot of the historic fortress hill and has long been home to both Georgian Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic communities, whose churches stand close together as quiet evidence of the city's layered cultural past. The district is considered the heart of old Tbilisi.

Winter is the finest season to see this view in person, when snowfall strips the scene to its essential colors and the warm glow from bathhouse domes seems to push back against the cold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tbilisi finds a home on your wall.
