About the view

Abanotubani Sulfur Baths

The scene looks out across a cluster of rounded warm-terracotta domes, their tiled surfaces catching full afternoon sun from a low, wide vantage point at street level. These are the Abanotubani sulfur baths of Tbilisi, and the composition lets them fill the foreground entirely — each dome a deep burnt-orange hemisphere, punctuated by small oval openings that glow with shadow. Behind them, the neighbourhood climbs steeply: powder-blue and cream facades with carved wooden balconies rise in layers, a cliff face pushes up to the left where old fortifications crown the ridge, and a single full-canopied tree bursts green against a sky of cobalt blue and billowing white cloud. The palette swings between the hot copper of the domes and the cool blue of wall, sky, and shutter, kept alive by that bright Georgian midday light.

The history & when to go

The Abanotubani district takes its name directly from the baths — "abano" meaning bath in Georgian — and the sulfurous hot springs beneath this quarter are credited in legend with inspiring the city's founding in the fifth century. The baths have functioned here, in various structures, for well over a thousand years, serving travellers along the Silk Road as well as locals who have long regarded them as a central part of daily life. Writers, diplomats, and merchants from across Asia and Europe recorded visits to these chambers in their accounts of the city.

Early morning, when steam drifts between the domes and the light turns the brick golden, is the finest time to experience this view in person.

Clusters of terracotta domes rise from the earth in Tbilisi's oldest quarter, their brick scales glowing amber beneath the Narikala fortress cliff. This watercolor study of the Abanotubani sulfur baths captures that warm ochre geometry against vivid blue sky and colorful carved balconies.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tbilisi finds a home on your wall.
