About the view

Metekhi Church Kura River

From the water's edge, the view opens wide across the Kura River in Tbilisi, the river running a luminous jade-green beneath a sky of deep cerulean scattered with rolling white clouds. A rugged cliff face rises sharply from the left bank, its warm amber and ochre tones anchored at the base by low riverside buildings with terracotta rooflines. Above them, the cliff surges upward to a broad plateau where Metekhi Church crowns the composition — its conical drum and copper-toned walls glowing against the bright sky. To the left of the church, a dark equestrian statue gestures outward against the blue, silhouetted and commanding. Green foliage spills over the clifftop and softens the edges of the scene, while a small passenger boat drifts quietly across the foreground, a dash of red and white on all that green water.

The history & when to go

Metekhi Church has stood on its cliff above the Kura for centuries, the current structure dating to the thirteenth century. It was built under King Demetrius II and has served as a place of Georgian Orthodox worship, a fortress, and at various points a prison, reflecting the turbulent passage of Tbilisi's history. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and remains an active religious site central to Georgian cultural and spiritual life.

Late spring and early summer bring the clearest skies and that particular bright river-green, making the walk along the opposite bank one of the finest ways to take in this view.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tbilisi finds a home on your wall.
