About the view

Narikala Fortress Old Tbilisi

Seen from across the rooftops of Old Tbilisi, the view rises in warm layers — terracotta tiles and cream-washed facades below, giving way to dense green canopies, and then the ancient bulk of Narikala Fortress crowning the rocky ridge above it all. Afternoon light falls generously across the scene, casting the old quarter in amber and rose while the fortress walls hold their deeper, earthier tones of warm stone. Tall, slender trees punctuate the hillside between the old houses and the battlements, and a domed church sits quietly within the fortress complex against a wide, cloud-drifted sky. The composition pulls the eye upward naturally, from the latticed wooden balconies of the neighborhood to the ruined towers at the summit.

The history & when to go

Narikala Fortress has stood above Tbilisi since at least the fourth century, and its walls were expanded significantly during the Arab and later Georgian royal periods. It remained a key military stronghold through many centuries of invasion and reconstruction, and a church within its walls was rebuilt in the twentieth century after an earthquake caused widespread damage to the complex. Today the fortress is one of Georgia's most recognized landmarks, a symbol of the city's long and layered history.

Late afternoon in the warmer months brings the golden-hour light that the canvas captures so well, when the old town glows and the fortress walls seem almost to radiate the warmth of the day back into the sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tbilisi finds a home on your wall.
