About the view

West Fork Oak Creek Canyon

The view opens from the creek bed itself, looking up-canyon into the heart of West Fork Oak Creek Canyon. A curved arm of warm red stone sweeps in from the right, its curved face catching the midday light and glowing a deep amber-brown. Ahead, the canyon walls rise in pale, sun-bleached tiers, their layered faces striped with shadows. Between those walls, a blaze of autumn color fills the middle distance — gold and butter-yellow canopy trees pressing against deep evergreen, with bursts of scarlet foliage igniting the center of the scene. A still, shallow pool in the foreground mirrors all of it: the trees, the warm stone, a sliver of vivid blue sky. Fallen leaves dust the flat rock at the water's edge, and the whole composition pulls the eye gently inward, deeper into the canyon.

The history & when to go

West Fork Oak Creek Canyon sits within the Coconino National Forest and has been recognized as one of the most scenic hikes in the American Southwest. The creek has carved its narrow canyon corridor over millions of years, and the sheltered microclimate within its walls supports an unusually rich mix of plant life, which is why autumn color here can rival anything in New England. The canyon also holds the remnants of an early twentieth-century lodge that once welcomed guests into this remote setting.

Late October through early November typically brings peak autumn color to West Fork, when the low canyon light filters through the turning canopy at its most vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sedona finds a home on your wall.
