About the view

Sedona Red Rocks Snow

Seen from an elevated vantage looking north across the basin, Sedona's red rock formations rise in a broad, dramatic sweep, their warm burnt-sienna faces blazing against a fresh layer of snow. Low clouds cling and drift between the spires, softening the peaks into pale rose and violet, while the foreground stretches out as a sea of frost-dusted trees in silver-green and white. A single low formation sits at the center of the composition like a resting figure, and above it the sky opens into a cool powder blue where the storm is just beginning to lift. The palette is extraordinary — deep terracotta held steady against the cold wash of winter, the whole scene suspended in that rare stillness that follows snowfall.

The history & when to go

Sedona's red rock country has been a protected landscape since the late twentieth century, with much of the surrounding terrain managed as part of the Coconino National Forest and the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. The formations took shape over millions of years of sediment deposit and erosion, and the area holds deep significance for several Indigenous peoples of the Southwest. It became widely known as an arts destination in the mid-twentieth century, drawing landscape painters and later photographers drawn by the quality of the light.

Snow falls in Sedona only a handful of times each year, most often between December and February, and it rarely lingers past a day or two — making this particular view one of the most fleeting in the American Southwest.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sedona finds a home on your wall.
