About the view

Cathedral Rock Red Rocks

Cathedral Rock rises from the high desert outside Sedona in twin towers of deep burnt-red and amber, their layered faces catching the last warmth of a setting sun. The view is taken from the creek's edge, looking north across still water that mirrors the formation almost perfectly — cliffs above, cliffs below, the composition folding on itself along a quiet horizon line. Bands of gold and copper run through the low vegetation at the base of the rocks, while a wide sky overhead moves from soft violet-grey on the left to a blaze of orange and yellow where the sun drops behind the scene. Smooth, rounded warm stones rest in the shallows of the foreground, their cool shadows anchoring the otherwise fiery palette.

The history & when to go

Cathedral Rock is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in Arizona and holds deep significance to the Yavapai-Apache Nation, whose ancestral ties to this landscape extend back long before the region became a destination for visitors. The formation draws hikers, artists, and those who come simply to sit with the view — particularly at the creek crossing that offers this iconic double reflection. It has appeared in countless films and images that shaped popular ideas of the American West.

Late afternoon in autumn brings a beautiful version of this light, when the foliage along the creek turns gold and the low sun hits the warm stone at its most saturated angle.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sedona finds a home on your wall.
