About the view

Bell Rock Courthouse Butte Sedona

The Milky Way rises directly above Courthouse Butte in Sedona, its core blazing with a column of gold and violet light that seems to erupt from the flat-topped summit itself. The view looks across open desert floor — warm red earth in the foreground, a low sweep of dark scrubby trees catching the last trace of twilight at the horizon. To the left, the rounded silhouette of Bell Rock stands smaller and quieter, its warm amber flanks glowing against a deep cobalt sky scattered with stars. The composition pulls the eye straight upward along that luminous galactic band, the butte anchoring it like a pedestal holding the heavens in place.

The history & when to go

Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte are among the most recognized formations in the American Southwest. Both rise from the floor of the Verde Valley just south of Sedona's center, and trails encircling their bases have been walked for generations. The broader landscape has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, and the Yavapai-Apache Nation maintains deep cultural ties to this land. Courthouse Butte, the larger of the two formations, reaches roughly 1,000 feet above the valley floor and is protected within the Coconino National Forest.

The Milky Way core is most visible from late spring through early autumn; clear moonless nights in July and August offer the darkest skies and the brightest galactic detail above the buttes.

Courthouse Butte rises from the red desert floor of Sedona as the Milky Way erupts above it in a column of violet and gold fire. This watercolor print renders that celestial drama in deep cobalt, burnished amber, and soft galactic luminescence against the ancient sandstone.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sedona finds a home on your wall.
