About the view

Sedona Natural Rock Arch

A sweeping natural rock arch frames the scene from close range, its warm stone curving in a broad, confident span across the upper half of the composition. The view is taken from just below the arch, looking outward through the opening toward a wide valley floor thick with deep green trees and, beyond them, a distant mesa glowing amber in the low light. The sky above transitions from soft lavender at the horizon to a pale blush pink at the top of the canvas, catching the last warmth of either dawn or dusk. Small, wind-shaped trees cling to the top of the arch, their silhouettes quiet against that fading glow. The warm reds and burnt oranges of the rock face hold the eye, while the cool valley below pulls the gaze deeper into the distance.

The history & when to go

Sedona's rock arches are formed over vast stretches of time as softer layers of rock erode away. They are concentrated across the red rock country of the American Southwest, and Sedona's examples draw visitors and photographers from around the world. The arches carry deep significance for Indigenous peoples who have lived in and traveled through this landscape for thousands of years.

The arch catches its most dramatic color just after sunrise or before sunset, when the warm stone seems almost to generate its own amber light.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sedona finds a home on your wall.
