About the view

Roussillon Village Lavender Fields

Rows of violet and deep purple sweep from the very foreground of the scene straight toward the hilltop village of Roussillon, their neat lines converging on a single pale-blossomed tree that stands at the center like a quiet focal point. Warm amber light floods in from the left, gilding the dense canopy of green that wraps the hillside and setting the warm-toned cluster of rooftops and a slim bell tower ablaze against a pale blue sky streaked with soft cloud. The cliffs below the village burn in shades of deep terracotta and copper, glowing as if lit from within, while the lavender rows shift from violet-pink at the edges to a rich, saturated purple in the shadows between each line. The composition pulls the eye on a long, satisfying journey from the blooms at your feet all the way up to the sky.

The history & when to go

Roussillon has been a working village since medieval times, its identity shaped by centuries of ochre quarrying that made the surrounding land one of the most productive sources of natural pigment in France. The quarries supplied color to industries across Europe before synthetic dyes reduced demand in the twentieth century. Today the village and its surrounding ochre landscape are protected, and a marked walking trail guides visitors through the old quarry workings on the edge of town.

The lavender typically reaches full bloom in late June and July, which is also when the golden late-afternoon light best catches the cliffs and warms the village to the colors you see here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Roussillon finds a home on your wall.
