About the view

Colorado Provençal Ochre Canyon

A sandy path draws the eye straight toward a solitary tree balanced on the peak of a tall, flame-colored spire at the Colorado Provençal Ochre Canyon in Roussillon. The view is taken from low and close to the ground, so the warm rust-red walls rise steeply on either side, narrowing toward that central pinnacle like the end of a natural corridor. Late light catches the face of the spire and ignites it — deep crimson at the core shading outward to amber and burnt orange — while the flanking slopes cool into shadow. A band of tall, dark-green trees lines the ridge above, their canopy pressing against a pale, hazy sky that lets all the warmth settle below.

The history & when to go

The Colorado Provençal takes its nickname from the American Southwest it calls to mind, though it sits firmly in the Luberon hills of Provence. These formations are the direct result of centuries of ochre extraction: miners worked the deposits here from at least 1871 onward, and the industry grew significantly in the nineteenth century as demand for natural pigments spread across Europe. When synthetic alternatives arrived in the twentieth century, the quarrying largely ceased, leaving behind this sculpted canyon landscape. Today the site is protected and managed as a public trail, preserving one of the most concentrated and vivid ochre landscapes on the continent.

The colors are richest in the lower-angled light of spring and autumn mornings, when shadows deepen the canyon walls and the spire catches the first direct sun of the day.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Roussillon finds a home on your wall.
