About the view

Roussillon Ochre Pinnacles Trail

A dusty ochre trail curves through the foreground and leads the eye toward a row of tall, slender warm-stone pinnacles rising from the cliff edge at Roussillon. The spires shift in color from pale cream on the left to deep burnt sienna and rust on the right, catching full midday sun that makes them glow almost from within. Lush, low-growing trees press in on both sides of the path, their vivid yellow-green foliage a sharp and luminous contrast to all that warm earth. A single tall tree crowns the highest pinnacle, silhouetted against a cobalt sky scattered with two small wisps of cloud. Far to the left, soft blue hills dissolve into the distance, giving the scene a sense of wide, open Provençal air.

The history & when to go

The ochre formations at Roussillon were created over millions of years as iron-rich deposits eroded into the shapes visitors see today. From the late eighteenth century onward, ochre was quarried here on an industrial scale and exported across Europe as a pigment for dyes and coatings. Quarrying eventually declined through the twentieth century, and the site was preserved as a protected natural trail that winds through the heart of the formations.

Late spring and early autumn bring the most dramatic light to the trail, when the sun sits low enough to rake across the pinnacles and intensify every shade of amber and red.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Roussillon finds a home on your wall.
