About the view

Roussillon Ochre Cliffs Village

Seen from across a wooded valley at dusk, the ochre cliffs of Roussillon rise like a column of flame against a deep cobalt sky. The warm stone faces — fluted and rippled into tall, finger-like forms — catch artificial light from below, burning amber and deep gold where the surface folds into shadow. Above them, the rooftops and glowing windows of the village cling to the clifftop, silhouetted softly against the last blush of pink along the horizon. Tall, dark trees crowd the foreground in near-black silhouette, making the illuminated cliff face feel almost suspended — a mass of fire between earth and sky. The cool blue above and the molten orange below hold the composition in a quiet, breathtaking tension.

The history & when to go

Roussillon sits within the Luberon regional park in the Vaucluse department of Provence, and the cliffs beneath the village are part of one of the most significant ochre deposits ever worked in Europe. Ochre was mined and processed here commercially from the late eighteenth century until the early twentieth, supplying pigment to industries across the continent. The village itself dates to medieval times, and its church and belfry have looked out over the same valley for centuries. Today a marked walking trail leads visitors through the cliffs, known as the Sentier des Ocres.

The view shown here is at its most dramatic in the blue hour just after sunset, when the cliffs are lit and the sky deepens into that saturated Provencal blue.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Roussillon finds a home on your wall.
