About the view

Roussillon Village Hilltop Church

A dusty track leads the eye upward from the foreground, bordered on one side by a low warm-stone wall and on the other by silvery-leafed trees whose gnarled branches lean gently into the path. The view is from below the village, looking up toward Roussillon as the last gold of sunset bleeds across the horizon. Above the rooftops — deep terracotta, rust, and burnt amber stacked against the hillside — a bell tower rises at the crown, its small dome catching the final warmth of the day. Tall rounded trees anchor the far right edge, dark against a sky that fades from pale lemon at the horizon through soft peach and into a cool blue-grey above.

The history & when to go

The hilltop church that crowns Roussillon has served as the village's spiritual and visual centerpiece for centuries, its bell tower visible for miles across the Luberon valley. Roussillon itself has been continuously inhabited since medieval times and was classified as one of France's most beautiful villages. During the twentieth century the village gained wider attention when American sociologist Laurence Wylie spent a year there and wrote about its daily life, drawing international visitors curious about an authentic corner of Provence.

Late spring and early autumn offer the clearest evening light along this approach path, when the setting sun strikes the warm-toned cliffs and facades at a low angle and the air carries just enough coolness to make the walk a pleasure.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Roussillon finds a home on your wall.
