About the view

World Peace Pagoda Pokhara

A dome of brilliant white rises from a densely forested hilltop, its golden spire catching the last warmth of a fading sun. The view sweeps outward from somewhere above and behind the stupa, revealing the full drama of the scene: Phewa Lake glimmers in deep cobalt below, curving softly through the valley like a ribbon of fallen sky. To the left, the scattered rooftops of Pokhara dissolve into haze, while ahead the Annapurna range fills the upper third of the composition in layers of rose, violet, and deep shadow. A single luminous cloud catches the alpenglow above the highest peaks, tying the warm summit light to the cool blue distance between. The World Peace Pagoda stands at the precise center of it all, small against the mountains yet unmistakably the heart of the image.

The history & when to go

The World Peace Pagoda in Pokhara is one of more than eighty peace pagodas built around the world by the Japanese Buddhist organization Nipponzan-Myohoji, founded by Nichidatsu Fujii. Completed in 1999, it was constructed with the involvement of both Japanese monks and Nepali workers. Perched on a hill on the southern shore of Phewa Lake, it was built as a monument to peace and as a symbol of Buddhist teachings on non-violence. It draws pilgrims, meditators, and travelers alike, and remains one of the most visited sites in the Pokhara Valley.

The view from the hilltop at dawn or dusk rewards visitors with alpenglow on the Annapurna peaks at their most vivid, exactly the light captured in this watercolor-style canvas.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Pokhara finds a home on your wall.
