About the view

Annapurna Range Sunrise Pokhara

The view looks northward from a high vantage above the Pokhara valley, the Annapurna Range filling the upper half of the canvas in a blaze of amber and copper. First light catches the snow-covered summits and sets them glowing — deep orange along the ridgelines, ivory and gold where the peaks push highest into a dark teal sky. Below the mountains, a sea of cloud pools in the middle distance, its upper surface flushed pale pink and lavender by the same low sun. Closer foothills curve across the foreground in cool blue-grey shadow, a few warm ridges just catching the earliest rays, grounding the composition and giving the eye a sense of enormous, layered depth.

The history & when to go

The Annapurna massif is one of the great mountain groups of the Himalayas, reaching heights that place several of its peaks among the tallest on earth. Annapurna I, the highest summit in the range, was the first mountain above 8,000 metres to be climbed, a milestone reached by a French expedition in 1950. The range has drawn mountaineers, trekkers and pilgrims for decades, and the circuit that winds around it is one of the most celebrated long-distance walking routes in the world.

Sunrise comes quickly at altitude, and the October-to-November post-monsoon window offers the clearest skies and the most vivid colour.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Pokhara finds a home on your wall.
