About the view

Phewa Lake Pagoda Pokhara

From the middle of Phewa Lake, the view opens onto one of Pokhara's most quietly arresting scenes. A tiered pagoda with a deep-red facade and layered green roofline sits on a small wooded peninsula, its warm tones anchored by tall, rounded trees on either side. Narrow wooden boats rest along the near shore, their hulls catching the same amber light that ripples across the water in long, soft reflections. Behind the treeline, forested ridges climb in deepening shades of blue-green before giving way to the immense snow-covered shoulders of the Annapurna massif, filling the upper half of the composition with white and pale violet against a clear open sky.

The history & when to go

Tal Barahi Temple, which stands on a small island in Phewa Lake, is one of the most visited Hindu shrines in the Pokhara valley. Dedicated to the goddess Barahi, a form of the divine associated with protection and power, it draws devotees and visitors who reach it by rowboat. The two-tiered pagoda-style structure is a well-established landmark of the lake and has long been central to the religious and cultural life of the surrounding community.

The morning hours offer the stillest water and the clearest views of the Annapurna range, when the peaks are sharp against the sky before afternoon clouds begin to gather.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Pokhara finds a home on your wall.
