About the view

Tower Bridge Thames River

Tower Bridge spans the Thames at dusk in this view, its paired towers rising into a sky that has dissolved into layers of coral, rose, and soft lavender. Warm amber light glows from within the towers, catching the carved detail of their turrets and spires, while the suspension cables sweep in graceful arcs toward each bank. Below, the river runs dark and wide, its surface broken by the quiet wakes of passing vessels. London's modern skyline clusters behind the bridge, a cluster of glass forms catching the last blush of evening, their cool blue-grey tones playing against the warm flush of the sky. The composition pulls the eye straight through the center span and out toward the horizon, where city and sky seem to breathe into each other.

The history & when to go

Tower Bridge was completed in 1894 after eight years of construction, built to ease congestion on London Bridge while still allowing tall ships to pass upriver. Its bascule span can be raised to let river traffic through, a feat of Victorian engineering that remains operational today. The bridge connects the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Southwark, and has served as one of the most recognized silhouettes in the world for well over a century.

The pink and amber tones shown here appear most vividly in late autumn and winter, when the sun sets early and at a low angle directly behind the western skyline.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of London finds a home on your wall.
